Anyone watching the pro game is awed by the incredible reflexes and fantastic saves of the great goalies. Buffon undoubtedly won the World Cup for Italy last time out. He was their best player. Iker Castillas of Real Madrid may be the best player in the world.

But spectacular shot-stopping is only a small part of the goalie’s role – and it’s not the most important part either, especially in the modern game where the goalie is expected to do a lot more.

We are going to review the following areas in detail:

  • shot stopping and handling technique
  • positioning
  • handling crosses and high balls
  • distribution
  • saving penalties
  • communications (see section 9)
  • the mental game for goalies
  • using your feet
